Jeffrey S. Leon

Mr. Leon is a well known Arbitrator and Mediator at Arbitration Place in Toronto. He​ recently retired as a senior, highly  respected civil ​trial lawyer at ​Bennett Jones LLP. Over his 45 year career he has been committed to serving the legal profession andthe public in many volunteer roles, including as President of the American College of Trial Lawyers and The Advocates' Society and as Chair of Pro Bono Ontario. Among other awards and recognitions by the legal profession, he received the Queen Elizabeth II
Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his achievements in law and his commitment to serving his community.

Jill Mayer

Jill Mayer is a U.S. lawyer and a professional development consultant, with experience as a not-for-profit executive. Formerly the Director of Continuing Professional Development for the Ontario Bar Association, her experience includes over two decades dedicated to creating professional development for lawyers, corporate directors and other professionals, and to initiatives for equity, diversity, inclusion,
and combating antisemitism. She has pioneered award-winning and career-enhancing programs for lawyers, financial professionals, and corporate directors, spanning over 40 legal areas, wellness, diversity, inclusion, anti-discrimination, and governance.

Since 2018, Jill has also developed numerous programs on using legal skills to combat antisemitism for legal organizations in Canada and the US. She launched the Linkedin group, Lawyers Combating Antisemitism, in September 2023 and founded it as a not - for-profit organization in July 2024.

Joseph A. Neuberger

Joseph Neuberger is a leading criminal defence lawyer (and certified specialist in Criminal Law by the Law Society of Ontario) for over 30 years. He is the past President of the Toronto Lawyers Association and has lectured and written on many critical criminal justice issues. He has been counsel on a number of high-profile cases as well as lead counsel on a number of public inquiries and coroner inquests.

Mr. Neuberger is the author of the leading legal text on Dangerous Offenders, “Assessing Dangerousness: Guide to the Dangerous Offender Application Process,” and a quarterly update, “Sexual Assault Law Newsletter,” both published by Thomson Reuters.

Mr. Neuberger was appointed to the Ontario Review Board as a legal member in 2001 and became an alternate chair for the Board in 2002.

Mr. Neuberger has been active on issues involving safety and security for the Jewish community, including sitting on the UJA security committee, working with CIJA and other ad hoc groups addressing antisemitism.

Leora Shemesh

Leora Shemesh, a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School in 2000, is a distinguished lawyer known for her expertise in criminal law and her dedication to combating antisemitism. After articling with Greenspan Humphrey Levine and Paul Burstein, she became a partner at Neuberger Rose LLP before founding her own law practice in 2006. Leora has represented clients at all levels of court, focusing on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, search warrants, and defending constitutional rights, particularly in cases of excessive police force. She played a pivotal role in the legalization of marijuana in Regina v. Hitzig and has successfully challenged privacy violations and police conduct. Beyond her legal practice, Leora serves as Vice President of the Abraham Global Peace Initiative, where she leads efforts to combat racism and antisemitism worldwide. A dedicated mentor and educator, she has taught at the Toronto Advocates Society and Osgoode Hall Law School, sharing her expertise with the next generation of criminal lawyers. Leora’s commitment to justice and human rights is evident in hersuccessful defense of clients facing serious charges and her passionate advocacy for equality and inclusion.

David Stolow

David Stolow, a partner at Kugler Kandestin LLP in Montreal, is recognized by his peers as a leading trial and appellate attorney. He specializes in civil litigation, corporate and commercial litigation, class actions, and arbitration. David has successfully argued cases before all levels of court in Québec and the Supreme Court of Canada. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb.), a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Québec Bar, and is a Past President of the Lord Reading Law Society. David co-led the initiative, in December 2023, resulting in a letter signed by 200+ law firms across Canada to the deans of all Canadian law schools regarding the importance for them to provide guidance and protection to students in a manner affirming Canadian values.

Honourable Marina S. Paperny, K.C.

Marina was a justice on the Court of Appeal of Alberta for 22 years and on the Alberta court of Kings Bench for 5 years before that. Marina is currently senior counsel to BLG and specializes in litigation strategy , preparation, mediation and arbitration. Marina has been a long time committed member to Calgary’s Jewish community. serving as board and executive member of Calgary Jewish federation as well as chairing many of its committees. She has been Chair of the United Jewish Appeal campaign and a long time advisor and fundraiser for the Calgary Jewish Centre.

Josh Weinstein

Josh Weinstein is a member of the Myers LLP criminal department, practicing almost exclusively in the area of criminal defence and has appeared at all levels of court in Manitoba and the Supreme Court of Canada. He is a Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section and a Past President of the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. Josh is a Bencher for the Law Society of Manitoba and serves as a member of its Complaints Investigation Committee.

He has frequently appeared as a guest lecturer at the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, The Winnipeg Police Service Recruit Program, the Law Society of Manitoba's Continuing Legal Education Program, and as a presenter at Manitoba's annual Crown and Defence Conference.

Josh is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, has been recognized by Best Lawyers® Canada in the area of Criminal Defence, and is a recipient of the CBA’s Douglas Miller Award.

Josh volunteers on a number of boards and is currently finishing a two-year term as President of the Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education.

Victor Goldberg

Victor Goldberg, KC is Counsel in the Halifax office of the law firm, Cox & Palmer. Victor holds a BA from Dalhousie University, a law degree from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Law degree in corporate law and criminology from King’s College University of London.

Throughout 45 years of practicing law, he has shown exceptional dedication to community service. Victor is an active member of the Jewish community, currently serving on the Advisory Board of the Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee and on the Board of the Atlantic Jewish Council. He is also the Vice Chair of the Atlantic Jewish Foundation. He previously served as a Board member of the Beth Israel Synagogue, President of the Atlantic Jewish Council, co-chair of Camp Kadimah, a Board member of CIJA, and on the Executive of the CJC and UIAFC.

His leadership roles within local, Atlantic and National Jewish organizations underscore his dedication to combatting anti-semitism and all forms of hate while promoting community cohesion and growth.

Alexa Abiscott

Alexa is a 20-plus year Ontario lawyer with a broad background in advocacy, issues management, post-secondary education, technology and governance. Alexa worked at Goodmans LLP from 2004-2012 as a litigator, served as the inaugural General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Governors of Sheridan College from 2012-2020 and since 2020 has been the Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of ApplyBoard Inc. a global ed-tech technology company.

Alexa has varied experience as a director on several boards (including previously on URJ Camp George, Hippo Co-operative School and Maplewood) and served as an inaugural independent director at CoinSmart Inc. (NEO: SMRT) prior to its merger with WonderFi. Alexa is a Co-Founder and Past-President of Women General Counsel Canada, a national organization dedicated to women general counsel, and is certified ICD in NFP Governance from the Institute of Corporate Directors at Rotman. Alexa lives in Toronto with her husband and four children and is wholeheartedly dedicated to supporting the Jewish community across Canada.

Deborah E. Palter

Deborah is a partner at Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP and an experienced advocate with a broad commercial and civil litigation practice. She acts for individuals, companies and financial institutions providing creative advice and strategies for litigating and resolving complicated business disputes. Her significant mandates include cases involving complex commercial agreements, banking litigation, commercial real estate disputes, fraud claims, shareholder and partnership disputes, insolvency proceedings and securities-related matters over a wide cross-section of industries. She appears regularly in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and in the negotiation, mediation and private arbitration of commercial disputes. Deborah sat on the Commercial List Users’ Committee (2015-2019), a committee comprised of members of the judiciary, courts administration and senior members of the bar who meet regularly to consider improvements to the organization and operation of the Commercial List.

Deborah is a past President of The Advocates’ Society, the leading association of litigation counsel in Canada dedicated to the promotion of excellence in advocacy, access to justice and a strong, independent and courageous bar. She served on the Society’s board of directors for 8 years (2014-2022) and chaired The Advocates’ Society Task Force overseeing its intervention in the landmark constitutional case Trinity Western University v. Law Society of Upper Canada and Law Society of British Columbia v. Trinity Western University. In 2024, Deborah acted as counsel to an intervenor making submissions on the public interest in fostering a safe environment for discourse and debate at centres of higher learning in University of Toronto (Governing Council) v. Doe et al. She is recognized as a leading litigator in several major legal publications and is a frequent speaker, moderator and advocacy skills trainer.

Melanie Samuels

Melanie Samuels is a Partner at Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP, where she brings over 30 years of expertise in Labour and Employment Law. She is Chair of the Employment and Labour Group, Co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusivity and Strategic Planning Committees, and was the first woman appointed to the firm’s Management Committee. Melanie advises clients on workplace issues, including discipline and dismissal, drafting employment contracts and policies, and addressing human rights matters such as harassment and accommodation. She has a particular focus on supporting creative industries like film and music, guiding them on harassment policies and protocols, conducting investigations, and offering practical recommendations to foster respectful workplaces.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Melanie has made a profound impact on the Jewish community in Vancouver. She is currently Co-Chair of the Lion of Judah division of the Federation of Greater Vancouver and has served on the Federation’s cabinet. A past board member of the Jewish Community Foundation, Melanie was also President of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver from 2012 to 2014, following 20 years of dedicated service as a board member. She has further contributed as Co-Chair of Family Visionaries for Jewish Family Service Agency.

Melanie’s leadership and dedication exemplify her commitment to strengthening her professional field and her community. She is a sought-after speaker on workplace law and an advocate for diversity, inclusion, and equity both in and outside the workplace.
